We’ve wanted to visit Vietnam for some time, but due to Covid were unable to. But, we are pleased to say that Vietnam is open to tourists in 2023. Here’s our short guide to covid restrictions in Vietnam as of 2023. This is based on our experience of travelling in December 2022 and January 2023, and we will endeavour to keep this post updated periodically.
Are covid tests required to enter Vietnam?
As of January 2023, covid tests are not required for any travellers from the UK, USA, Canada, Europe, Australia or New Zealand. There is also no quarantine requirement when entering Vietnam as of 2023. As of March 2022, Vietnam has been open to tourists.
Are visas required for travel to Vietnam in 2023?
Yes. In 2023, many nationals will require visas to enter Vietnam. For travellers from the UK and USA, entry to Vietnam for tourist purposes is allowed for up to 15 days. However, travellers can apply for a 30 day visa to enter Vietnam for tourist purposes. If you fly direct to Phu Quoc and do not enter mainland Vietnam, most nationals will be able to stay in Phu Quoc for 30 days without a visa.
Apply online for your visa and allow at least 3 working days.Be sure to check the requirements with your relevant embassy and foreign office, as visa requirements can change at short notice.
Are masks required on public transport in Vietnam?
According to official websites, masks are required on public transport including buses and airplanes. In our experience of travel in Vietnam in 2023, masks are not actually required on public transport. Travellers on domestic, international airlines and buses do not require masks in Vietnam in 2023.
Are masks required anywhere in Vietnam?
During our visit to Vietnam in 2023, we were not required to wear masks anywhere in Vietnam. We noticed that many, including local Vietnamese, do still wear masks, but this was not a mandatory requirement anywhere that we travelled.
Is tourism back to normal in Vietnam after covid?
It is difficult to confirm if tourism is back to normal in Vietnam after covid. In terms of requirements on travellers, it does feel normal once again. We were not required to wear masks or to take any covid tests.
Vietnam officially reopened to tourists in March 2022 and as of 2023, there are no signs of this changing. In 2021, only 150,000 tourists entered Vietnam, compared to 20 million in 2020. In 2022, the number of tourists had gradually started to increase from March onwards.
