WHERE TO STAY IN OHRID – THE MAIN TOWN AND BEYOND.

While Ohrid town exudes historic charm and vibrant energy, Lake Ohrid’s sprawling shoreline boasts a wide array of accommodation options to suit every traveller’s preference.

From serene villages offering a peaceful retreat to unique towns providing an authentic local experience, Lake Ohrid caters to all preferences.

After spending three weeks in and around Ohrid to thoroughly explore the best places to stay, we are excited to present a comprehensive guide to the finest accommodations around Lake Ohrid in this blog post.

Where to stay in Ohrid: A map

You can find a map of where to stay in Ohrid below. We also include the best beaches in Ohrid on the map – you can find out about each one here in our detailed guide.

Ohrid town

Ohrid Town is the most obvious choice if you are visiting Lake Ohrid. In most cases, we would recommend staying in Ohrid itself, rather than around the lake in quieter villages.

In particular, if this is your first visit to Ohrid or you only have a few days we recommend booking accommodation in the town. Staying in Ohrid will also suit you if you want to “get amongst it”, with the option for tavernas, beach clubs and nightlife.

If you are in Ohrid for longer than a couple of days, say a week or 10 days, then we would urge you to consider staying in Ohrid and one of the quieter villages to get a different perspective.

That said, Ohrid does get busy in the summer and if you prefer things a little more sedate, staying on an outer village or in the back streets of Ohrid may suit you better.

In Ohrid itself, there are broadly three choices when it comes to the location of accommodation.

Old Town Ohrid

The Ohrid Old Town is quaint and idyllic, it’s difficult not to get swept up in the romance of the cobbled streets. Staying in the old town is ideal for a few days of relaxation and would suit couples looking for nightlife. From apartments in old town you can easily visit some of the best beaches in Ohrid too.

Personally, I would not recommend the old town location for families or anyone with mobility limitations. This is because the streets are cobbled and can be steep – which may not suit pushchairs or little ones. Families should note that the old town can be noisy at night too.

Pros

✔️Atmopsheric and romantic location, often apartments have views of the lake from above

✔️ A range of budget and luxury accommodation

✔️Easy access to Old Town beaches, like Kaneo Beach and fantastic restaurants

Cons

❌Apartments tend to be small as buildings are traditional / not modern

❌Restaurants & bars in the Old Town are a little more expensive

❌Old Town can get crowded and is requires good mobility to get up and down hills

Old Town Ohrid: Where to stay

Lake front location

What could be better than a lake front location on Ohrid? There are a handful of hotels even offering a terrace with swim in and swim out perks.

Prices for this are a little higher, but when there are few places in the world with lakefront accommodation for even a vaguely affordable price. So I think it’s good value!

Pros

✔️Swim in and swim out terraces, often with sun loungers

✔️ Total escapism

Cons

❌Slightly more expensive

BEACH FRONT APARTMENT: Grunche

TERRACE ON THE WATER: House Lucija

Back streets of Ohrid

For budget travellers who want to stay in Ohrid, you can find a plethora of good value accommodation just a little walk away from the old town in the more modern, residential area of Ohrid. During our trip, we stayed a few streets back from the lake in a lovely quiet apartment for a bargain price.

Aside from the price, staying a few streets away from the old town means you get access to more local coffee shops and restaurants. The area tends to be quieter and there’s a lot more space. So it may also better suit families.

Pros

✔️Quieter location and access to more “local” bars and restaurants

✔️ A range of budget and luxury accommodation and apartments tend to be more spacious

✔️Easy access to water and some quieter beaches

Cons

❌Longer walk to Old Town and Old Town Beaches

❌Lacks the atmosphere and history of the Old Town

Top picks in the back streets of Ohrid

QUIET STREETS: Villa Aria

SELF-CATERED: Comfy Apartments

Trpejeca

Trpejeca immediately caught our eye when we were on the boat from Ohrid to Saint Naum and we knew we had to stay there. This is the place to stay if you want absolute R&R. Find an apartment with a terrace and a lake view and settle in for a few days.

Aside from swimming in the lake, gazing at the scenery and eating dinner in one of the few tavernas in Trpejeca, there isn’t much to do. This will only suit you if you want to get away from it all.

Top picks for Trpejeca

CLOSE TO BEACH: Vila Gjorgi

LAKE VIEW TERRACE: Villa Mrestiliste Trpejca

Sveti Stefan

Having visited Sveti Stefan in Montenegro, we were keen to see what the village of the same name in Ohrid had to offer. Although we didn’t stay in this village, we walked there from Ohrid and spent a lovely day on the beach.

This area will suit you if you want to be close to Ohrid (around 4kms) but want somewhere with more of a holiday resort feel. Sveti Stefan is little more than a beach with a handful of hotels and bars.

On the plus side, the beach here is very clean and the location is ideal for sunset views. For us, the vibe was a little quiet. But I can see the appeal if you want to de-camp to the beach for a few days or a relax in a hotel with a swimming pool.

FAMILY FRIENDLY HOTEL: Sileks Hotel – offers a swimming pool and restaurant

BEACH FRONT: Villa Swiss

WILD CARD: Sunset House offers bungalows just slightly up hill with a panoramic views of the lake

Struga

Struga is found on the shores of Lake Ohrid and is found around 20 minutes or so from Ohrid. The town has an interesting aspect owing to the river running through the centre.

In Struga, you’ll find a quieter atmosphere to Ohrid, but there are still restaurants and bars to enjoy. It doesn’t have the historical architecture of Ohrid, but it is also less hectic.

Lagadin + Peshtani

A little further around the lake from Sveti Stefan are the two small villages of Peshtani and Lagadin.

Both villages have a more local feel and offer the chance to totally relax and switch off away from the crowds of Ohrid. You can reach each village by local bus, taxi or of course water taxi.

COUPLES CHOICE: Vila Bisera in Lagadin has a romantic vibe and relaxing swimming pool
