MODICA OR RAGUSA: WHERE TO VISIT + STAY.

If you’re planning a trip to Sicily, you might find yourself torn between two of its stunning Baroque towns: Modica and Ragusa. Both are UNESCO-listed gems in the Val di Noto, famous for their striking architecture, and incredible food scenes.

But which is the better place to stay for a few days, and can you visit both in one day?

In this blog post, we will compare Modica and Ragusa, based on our experience of visiting both. To help you decide which one to include in your trip.

Can you visit Modica or Ragusa in the same day?

Theoretically, it is possible to visit Modica and Ragusa in one day. I know that many people take day trips from Syracuse or Catania to visit the towns. The two towns are only a 20- to 30-minute drive or bus ride apart.

If you are up for a long day of exploring, then you could combine the two. I would suggest Modica in the morning and Ragusa in the afternoon into evening, to get the best experience.

That said, I do think it does the towns a little bit of a disservice to rush through. Ideally,I’d recommend to spend at least one day in each place. The beauty of Modica and Ragusa are the moments of quiet in-between and appreciating the slower pace of life.

If you can, we would recommend spending one or two nights in Ragusa, taking a day trip to Modica one of the days.

Read on to find out more about the two tows of Modica and Ragusa.

Modica or Ragusa: Things to do

Modica: Modica is a town to explore at a slower pace. Its main draws are its stunning churches, like the Duomo di San Giorgio and Duomo di San Pietro, both shining examples of Baroque architecture.

If you enjoy meandering through narrow streets, stopping for a coffee or a bite of chocolate, Modica will charm you. While there’s not an abundance of attractions, the town’s relaxed atmosphere is part of its allure.

Ragusa: Ragusa, being larger, has more to offer when it comes to things to do. Ragusa Ibla, the older part of town, is packed with picturesque streets and grand churches, including the stunning Duomo di San Giorgio.

You can spend hours wandering through its winding alleys, discovering hidden piazzas and scenic viewpoints. Ragusa is also home to the beautiful Giardini Iblei, a lush garden perfect for a peaceful escape from the town’s streets.

Verdict: Both towns are far more about experiencing a slow pace of life and taking in beautiful surroundings than they are about ticking off things to do. But, both do have some lovely attractions. Ragusa, as the bigger of the two has marginally more to do.

Which is best for foodies, Modica or Ragusa?

Modica: Modica is famous for it’s unique chocolate – which you will either love or hate! The town is renowned for its ancient chocolate-making techniques, brought over from Spain. Don’t miss the chance to visit Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, the oldest chocolate factory in Sicily.

Beyond chocolate, Modica is also home to some lovely bistros and a Michelin star restaurant Accursio. And of course, you can always get the usual Sicilian treats – Arrancini, Pasta alla Norma and more.

Ragusa: Ragusa offers a broader range of dining options, including fine dining. The town is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants, like Duomo. But, if you’re on a budget, don’t worry – in addition to high-end cuisine, Ragusa also has plenty of trattorias and osterias serving traditional Sicilian fare.

We spent five nights in Ragusa and were still struggling to pick between all the fantastic restaurants in the city each night.

Verdict: For us, Ragusa just pips it. Not only are there two Michelin star restaurants, but a whole bunch of fantastic trattorias serving real Sicilian food at a range of budgets.

Which town is prettiest, Modica or Ragusa?

Modica: Modica’s beauty lies in its dramatic setting. A town split between two steep hills, with its churches and buildings cascading down the slopes.

The winding streets, layered buildings, and panoramic views from various vantage points make it a photographer’s dream.

Ragusa: Ragusa Ibla is often considered one of the prettiest towns in Sicily. With its meticulously restored Baroque buildings, flower-filled balconies, and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

Not to mention that Ragusa, like Modica, is also a town of two halves. With Ragusa Superiore, the modern part of the town, still showcasing some some fantastic Baroque architecture. Piazza San Giovanni with the view of the awe inspiring Cathedral, is simply one of the most peaceful places that I have enjoyed a coffee in all of Sicily.

Verdict: The combination of historic charm, variety and the dramatic views from Ragusa Superiore down to Ragusa Ilba, make Ragusa the prettiest in my eyes.

Modica or Ragusa: Which is best to stay a while

If you’re planning a longer stay, for us Ragusa is the clear winner. Its larger size means more options for dining, accommodation, and things to do.

The town comes alive in the evenings with its lively squares and excellent restaurants, making it a great base for a few days or even longer.

Modica, while beautiful, is quieter and has fewer options when it comes to accommodation and nightlife. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a more tranquil experience, but for a longer stay, you might find yourself running out of things to do after a day or two.

Verdict: Our suggestion is to visit both towns. Each is unique and charming. We favour a longer stay in Ragusa, but recommend a day trip to Modica.
