ONE DAY IN THE DUTCH CITY OF VENLO: A SHORT GUIDE.

Planning a day trip or stop over in Venlo? This short guide will tell you everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

We were walking the Pieterpad on a rainy day when we arrived in Venlo. Our original plan had been to continue on to a campsite, perhaps another 15km away. But partly due to the weather, and mostly due to the allure of having beers in a pretty cityscape, we ended up spending an impromptu afternoon and evening in Venlo.

In this blog post, we will set out the best things to do if you have one day in Venlo, as well as where to stay.

Best things to do in Venlo

Here are some of the best things to do in Venlo if you visit for one day or more.

1/Visit the Markt Square

Venlo centres around the Markt Square. A gorgeous spot filled with historic buildings, the centrepiece of which is the Stadhuis – a renaissance style town hall.

Around the square are outdoor terraces. One thing I love so much about Dutch cities is that outdoor terraces aren’t just for fine weather days. Normally, seating areas are covered and have heaters, so you can enjoy a morning coffee or a glass of Dutch beer in the evening.

The restaurants and bars around the square are all fairly similar, so it’s best to just pick a seat that speaks to you and enjoy the view. Look out for markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when things get a little livelier during the day.

2/ Tour the Limburgs Museum

The Limburgs Museum offers far more than just an insight into the history of Limburg. There is a vast array of exhibits, including Roman items. Currently there are also pieces from the famous Rijksmuseum, specifically works of art with connections to Limburg.

There are also more interactive exhibits, the music floor is particularly celebrated.

We didn’t have a chance to visit this museum, and our research suggests that there are some issues with information on exhibits being displayed in English. But, we hear that audio tours in English are available. Tickets cost €16.50.

3/ Stroll Along the Maas River

The River Maas runs through the city of Venlo and walking along the river is very pleasant. Find foot friendly paths to take in scenic views. The front of Venlo facing the water is very modern – starkly different to the old town. Some may find it too industrial, but we rather liked the starkness of it.

There are a few pleasant spots near to the river for drinks or a bite to eat.

4/ Explore Venlo’s Old Town

As much a we enjoyed the more modern river front of Venlo, it is really the Old Town that is the showstopper of the city.

Venlo is the perfect size to explore on foot over ac couple of hours. Start at the Markt and move in a figure of eight to get into the main streets. Don’t be afraid to delve into nooks and crannies like the tiny street of Keizerstraat.

Look out for Het Romherhuis Koffie – a gorgeous cafe and chocolate shop in one of Venlo’s oldest buildings.

5/ Enjoy Local Craft Beer at Café de Klep

Now, I don’t want readers to think that the Lotus Eaters Travel team are all about the beers – but Venlo is a city known for it’s beer. So, when in Venlo!

We discovered Cafe de Klep by chance as we ducked down a small street to hide from the rain. The pub just looked uber welcoming and I am so glad we went in. The decor is lovely, historic charm and vintage decor.

You can order a tasting flight, or just sample one of the many craft beers on the menu. The bar staff really know their hops from their elbows, so do ask them for a recommendation.

6/ Admire the Church of St. Martinus

Dutch churches have a very unique look to them, often Gothic with towering spires. Take a moment to visit St Martinus Church, in the heart of the city. You can pop in to see the church free of charge during opening hours.

The church often hosts concerts and cultural events, so check the schedule during your visit—you might be lucky enough to catch an organ recital or choral performance.

Where to stay in Venlo

If you’re planning an overnight stay, Venlo offers a few lovely options for accommodation.

Here are a few suggestions:

MILK & COOKIES: We stayed at Milk & Cookies when we visited in Venlo. It is a boutique B&B in the centre of the city, above a cute coffee shop.

B&B PRINS HENDRINK VENLO: A small B&B in the heart of the city, with pretty rooms. Room rate includes a breakfast.

MR JIGS: Mr Jigs is a smart hotel in the city centre with a bar. Perfect for a one night stay or a short weekend break in Venlo.

Where to visit near to Venlo

The province of Limburg is a unique and wonderful area. Whilst it is distinctly Dutch, there are also international references infused in the culture and architecture of this area. If you have extra time, consider venturing beyond Venlo to explore more of Limburg and the surrounding area.

Here are two fantastic nearby destinations nearby that we love:

1/ Maastricht

Just over an hour’s drive or a train ride from Venlo, Maastricht is one of the Netherlands’ oldest cities and a cultural hub. Stroll through its cobblestone streets, marvel at the Gothic splendor of St. Servaas Basilica, and enjoy some of the best dining and shopping the country has to offer.

Maastricht to me, is the perfect blend of history and modern sophistication. Don’t miss the chance to visit Boekhandel Dominicanen, a stunning bookstore housed in a former church.

2/ Valkenburg

A bit closer to Venlo, Valkenburg is a picturesque town known for its rolling hills and medieval ruins. The town’s highlight is the Valkenburg Castle, a hilltop fortress with panoramic views.

In the winter months, Valkenburg transforms into a festive wonderland with its Christmas markets held in the town’s underground caves. It’s an unforgettable experience that draws visitors from far and wide.
