Lefkada in May: What to expect

LEFKADA IN MAY: WHAT TO EXPECT.

Lefkada in May sits on the edge of summer — the island feels awake again, but not yet overwhelmed by visitors. The roads are quiet and the beaches still belong to local and hardy swimmers.

It’s a wonderful time to explore if you prefer slow mornings, light jackets over dresses, and the promise of summer without the crowds. But may not be the best time to go if you expect wall to wall sunshine every day.

Here’s what to expect if you visit Lefkada in May.

What’s the weather like in Lefkada in May

May in Lefkada is a month of transition. The days are longer, the skies often blue, and average temperatures hover between 20–25°C. But it’s not guaranteed beach weather every day — you might wake to a cloud-covered island or a light shower rolling in from the Ionian.

We had one full day of rain when we visited and quite a few blustery days.

The sea is starting to warm, but still on the cooler side for swimming. You’ll likely have a few glorious days that feel like midsummer — on those, it’s best to abandon all plans and head straight for the coast. I definitely braved the ocean, but I wasn’t hanging out for too long in there!

Evenings can still be a little chilly, so it’s wise to bring a jumper and a jacket.

What to pack for Lefkada in May

Think layers and versatility. Pack swimsuits, shorts, and sundresses for warm afternoons, but also light trousers, a cardigan, and a waterproof jacket for breezy evenings or the odd rain shower.

Comfortable shoes are a must if you plan to hike or explore the island’s villages.

You might also want to bring a light scarf or shawl for al fresco dinners when the wind picks up from the water.

My one regret was not packing a pair of jeans, or warmer trousers for the evening. Although I had some longer dresses and a jacket, I envied friends with warmer layers.

Accommodation in Lefkada in May

Our accommodation – Anthias Garden in Lefkada.

May is a great month for accommodation deals. Many hotels and guesthouses have reopened after winter, but the summer rush hasn’t yet begun. You’ll find quieter stays at good value.

We paid about €250 for a large apartment close to Lefkada town for one week. The same place would cost closer to €500 in high summer.

Because the island isn’t fully booked out, you can also afford to be spontaneous — book a few nights, see where the weather takes you, and move around if you fancy a change of scene. We wished we had done this, rather than picking one base.

Things to do in Lefkada in May

If you choose to visit Lefkada in May, it’s entirely plausable that you won’t have perfect sunbathing weather every day. Here are a few suggestions of things to do in Lefkada in May:

1/ Take a road trip

Hire a scooter or a small car and set off to explore. The island is so pretty and exploring with your own vehicle gives you a chance to see things at your pace.

Stop off at lookout points, sleepy inland villages, or hidden coves. We spent a couple of glorious days doing this, pausing for a quick swim or coffee.

Tip: if you do hire a scooter, consider driving down the east coast – it’s a much easier ride on a low powered bike.

2/ Explore Lefkada town

Lefkada Town in May is perfect for slow days. This is a great option if the weather isn’t quite up to snuff for the beaches.

We loved wandering through the colourful streets, seeing houses covered in bright pink flowers. Then dipping into the small museums like the Archaeological Museum of Lefkada.

There’s also a great selection of shops, especially if you’re interested in local products – like soaps and handicrafts.

3/ Take your time over morning coffee

One of the best things about Greece in the shoulder season is how unhurried mornings feel. We visited Agios Nikitas for coffee one day — although it wasn’t warm enough to swim, it was a lovely spot drink a frappe and gaze at the sea.

Or simply enjoy your balcony — a long breakfast of Greek yoghurt, honey, and fruit while you (and the island) slowly wakes up.

4/ Head out on a hike

When cooler days call, we always like to head out for a walk. In Lefkada, we went inland where we found surprisingly pleasing trails.

There are scenic trails around Englouvi and Exanthia, and from some vantage points, you can see sweeping views of the Ionian.

5/ Visit a vineyard

When the weather was a little dull one day, we decided to head to Siflogo Winery. It’s a small, family run vineyard which produces natural wines.

You have to book ahead, but the tour and tasting is well worth it.

6/ Have a long lunch by the sea

Rainy or not, nothing beats a long, lazy lunch overlooking the water. We spent an afternoon at Breath of Zorbas, sheltered from the rain but still watching the sea lap the shore.

There were a few groups, but it wasn’t a hectic vibe. We visited with friends who have children, and it was lovely to give the kids a chance to play in the sand, whilst we relaxed with drinks.

7/ Visit Nidri

Nidri is one of the liveliest spots on the island, even in May. The harbour fills with sailboats and day-trip boats heading out to nearby islands.

Stroll along the promenade, browse the shops, or take a seat by the water with an Aperol as the evening sun (hopefully) makes an appearance.

8/ Take a boat trip

If the weather is kind, take a boat trip from Nidri or Vasiliki. You can visit Meganisi, Skorpios, or even further afield to Ithaca.

9/ Sunbathe & swim when you can

We had a few days of truly glorious weather in May — those rare moments that feel like August. When that happens, drop everything and go.

The beaches on the east coast offer calmer sea and great views. Whilst the beaches to the west are wilder, but the sea is an out of this world shade of blue.
