ST KITTS BOAT TOUR WITH LEEWARD ISLAND CHARTERS ST KITTS.

In this blog post, you find our review of our experience aboard a Leeward Islands Charter as we sailed from St Kitts to Nevis. Our full day tour included lunch, drinks, snorkelling and beach time.

St Kitts was the first island we sailed to aboard Arvia, and after a blissful day at sea beforehand, we arrived slightly disoriented and completely offline. Twenty-four hours without internet might not sound like much, but for someone whose travel style usually involves a lot of Googling, it felt unsettling.

I’d done some research before leaving the UK, but not having every detail mapped out left me feeling out of my comfort zone as we docked in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

That feeling didn’t last long.

As soon as we stepped into port, we were met with a chorus of tour guides and taxi drivers calling out: “Let me show you the island!” The closer we got to the marina, the louder the shouts became. A last attempt, perhaps, to catch us before we disappeared independently.

And that’s when the relief hit.

We had already booked something special.

Instead of negotiating on the dock, we smiled, offered a polite “good morning,” and calmly followed the directions provided by Leeward Island Charters.

First Impressions at the Marina

At the marina, our names were checked off a list and we were guided to shaded seating. A welcome pause, as the Caribbean heat was already doing its thing. While we waited, we browsed the small on-site shop stocked with hats, T-shirts, Sun Bum sunscreen, and other essentials (ideal if you’ve forgotten a hat!)

Suddenly aware of just how intense the sun was, we had a last-minute panic and asked one of the crew if the boat had shade.

“Of course,” she laughed. “Shade, water, rum… everything you need.”

And just like that, I relaxed. We were clearly in good hands.

The Boat

I’ll be honest: I’m not a boat geek. I can’t tell you the exact specifications, but I can tell you this – it was a spacious, sleek catamaran, and to my eyes, the best-looking boat on the dock.

Once onboard, we were welcomed by the crew and given a safety briefing by Earl – the resident joker, setting the tone for the day.

Moments later, Elvis (who’s worked with the company for decades) was behind the bar offering cold water, Ting (a local grapefruit soda), or Ting with a Sting (vodka). There were also Carib beers and rum punch generously dusted with nutmeg.

As well as the open bar, what impressed us most was the space. Some guests stretched out on the nets at the front, others relaxed at the back, and with fewer passengers onboard, it never felt crowded. With four crew members plus the captain, we were exceptionally well looked after.

Setting Sail

We’ve been on charters before where the sails never leave the mast, all engine, no romance. This was not one of those days.

Within minutes, Captain Matt had hoisted the sails, and we were gliding across the water under wind power. It was glorious.

As Saint Kitts faded behind us, the crew shared fascinating insights about the coastline, the volcanic landscape, and the island’s history. We even caught a glimpse of the late Robert Redford’s house.

An hour or so later, we arrived at Shitten Bay (yes, that’s really its name). The crew explained its historical significance: enslaved people were once brought here from Nevis, washed, and then sold in St Kitts. A sobering story, gently shared, and one that added depth to the stunning surroundings.

Snorkelling & Rum Punches

Here, we were handed snorkels, flippers, and noodles and encouraged to explore beneath the surface. The underwater world was electric, schools of vivid blue and yellow fish darted past in every direction.

After about 90 minutes, we climbed back onboard, salty and smiling. That felt like the right moment to start on the rum punches. Reggae music drifted across the deck as we sailed past Booby Island, an uninhabited speck between St Kitts and Nevis with a very literal name.

Nevis & Beach Lunch

Soon after, we approached Nevis and eased into the bay. The captain expertly brought the boat right up to shore, dropped the steps, and we walked straight onto the sand, a small luxury that felt wonderfully indulgent.

Lunch was served at a brightly coloured picnic area: jerk chicken and fish, naturally accompanied by another rum punch. Just next door sat the famous Sunshine’s Beach Bar, home of the legendary Killer Bee cocktail.

We’d been warned to take it easy, many guests underestimate its potency, but curiosity won. One carefully sipped Killer Bee later, I found myself floating in the sea, marvelling at how beautiful the world felt. Very Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason on a Thai beach, though I stopped short of making sand angels.

The Sail Home

After a few glorious hours on the beach, we headed back onboard for the return sail to St Kitts and this is where the rum really started flowing.

Looking around, everyone wore the same expression: sun-kissed, slightly tipsy, utterly content. Laughter, music, and the gentle roll of the ocean carried us back toward the island.

It was hard to disembark and say goodbye.

How to book this fantastic experience

You can book the tour that we did with Leeward Island Charters directly here on their website or you can also book the experience on Get Your Guide. The full day tour including lunch costs $120. Leeward Island Charters also offer a half day tour.

We would wholeheartedly recommend Leeward Island Charters, but if for some reason you can’t get a spot on their boats – consider Blue Water Charters who offer a similar experience.

*Our experience with Leeward Island Charters was gifted – all opinions are our own.
