The Camino Frances runs from Saint Jean Pied de Port (often abbreviated to SJPP) in France, all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

As the busiest and most popular route, many people choose to walk the Camino Frances to maximise their opportunities to socialize. The route has the best infrastructure of all the Caminos, making it perfect for first timers too.

This is the route for you if you like Spanish cities, like Pamplona, filled with culture. But you also want to get out into proper rural Spain. This is the “off the beaten track” type of Spain that you wouldn’t normally see on vacation.

Full Camino Frances

DISTANCE: 780km (484 miles)

DURATION: 28 to 35 days

DIFFICULTY: Challenging

The Camino Frances, which spans approximately 800 kilometers across the stunning landscapes of Spain, is one of the most renowned and beloved pilgrimage routes in the world.

This ancient path, also known as the French Way, holds deep historical and cultural significance, attracting pilgrims and hikers from all corners of the globe. With its picturesque villages, rolling hills, and diverse terrain.

Pamplona to Logroño

DISTANCE: 94km

DURATION: 5 to 6 nights

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

WHEN TO GO: All year -peak season is April to October

The walk on the Camino from Pamplona to Logrono is an unforgettable experience. Starting in the bustling city of Pamplona, walkers have a chance to appreciate Spanish culture in the city famous for running of the bulls.

From there, the route enters beautiful and sometimes hilly countryside. You’ll climb to the famous sculpture of Alto del Perdón.

Soon you will enter the delightful wine region of Rioja. Famous for the red wine, which shares it’s name. Eventually you will reach the capital of the region, Logroño, but not before sampling wine at the famous wine fountain in a monastery on route.

Leon to Santiago de Compostela

DISTANCE: 311km

DURATION: 14 nights approx

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

ACCOMMODATION: Albergue or Pension

WHEN TO GO: Any time of the year – peak is April to October

This is the favourite section of the Camino Frances for the Lotus Eaters Travel team.

Starting in Leon, a dynamic, vibrant and beautiful city. Gourmands will love the cuisine in the city and the regions beyond.

The route continues into stunning countryside, before reaching the bustling city of Astorga, famous for Gaudi architecture.

Ahead, is the city of Ponferrada. Closely followed by a beautiful wine region, and quaint villages. You will soon climb to the highest point of the Camino Frances, before descending from the mountains into the enchanting region of Galicia. From there, it is onwards to Santiago de Compostela to celebrate.

Sarria to Santiago de Compostela

DISTANCE: 114km

DURATION: 5 to 6 nights

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

ACCOMMODATION: Albergue or Pension

WHEN TO GO: Any time of the year – peak is April to October

The walk from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela is quite special. It represents the last 100kms of the pilgrimage. For anyone walking for religious or spiritual reasons, this can be quite significant as 100km is the minimum distance required in order to get your “compostela” – a certificate.

For this reason, the section is quite busy. An enjoyable walk regardless, you will visit some stunning towns and countryside in Galicia before reaching Santiago.
