The Camino Primitivo runs from Oviedo, the ancient capital of Asturias, to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Known as the Original Way, it is the oldest documented Camino route—first walked by King Alfonso II in the 9th century—and today remains one of the most beautiful, rugged, and rewarding Caminos to experience.
Less travelled than the Camino Francés, the Camino Primitivo is perfect for walkers seeking quieter paths, challenging mountain terrain, and some of the most dramatic landscapes of any Camino route. With its blend of forest trails, high ridges, medieval towns, and authentic northern Spanish culture, this route offers an unforgettable and deeply meaningful pilgrimage.

Starting in Oviedo, home to some of Spain’s oldest religious sites, the route crosses the Asturian mountains, winds through remote hamlets, and then merges with the Camino Francés in Melide for the final stretch to Santiago.
