This Portuguese island, nicknamed the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” is a volcanic wonderland where emerald mountains pierce the clouds and colorful flowers spill over charming balconies. Funchal, the capital, is a delightful mix of pastel-colored buildings and cobbled streets, begging to be explored. But the real magic lies beyond the city.
Rental car secured (those winding roads are best tackled on four wheels!), we embarked on a journey through dramatic landscapes. Adventure seekers won’t be disappointed.
Hike the levadas, a network of irrigation channels that weave through the mountains, offering breathtaking panoramas. Or, if you prefer a slower pace, soak up the sun on a volcanic black sand beach and savor the freshest seafood you’ve ever tasted.
