How to get to Phu Quoc by boat and bus

The first option to travel to Phu Quoc is to take a bus followed by a boat/ ferry. The boat leaves from Thanh Thoi ferry port in Ha Tien.

To get to Ha Tien, you are likely to require a bus from one of the main cities.

To get from Hanoi to Ha Tien is quite a trek. You will need to a train and a bus. The train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh wil take 34 hours. The bus from Ho Chi Minh to Ha Tien takes approximately 8 hours.

To get from Hoi An to Ha Tien will require one train to Ho Chi Minh taking approximately 18 hours. Then you will need to take a bus to Ha Tien for approximately 8 hours.

To get from Ho Chi Minh to Ha Tien you can take one direct bus. This will take approximately 8 hours and cost less than $10.

To book all buses and trains in Vietnam, we used the Bookaway website. We found this easy to use and quick to book.

The fast ferry can be booked online – here. This ferry runs three times a day each way and takes 2.5 hours by sea. The current cost (as of 2023) is 500,000 VND for a return trip. This is approximately $20.

Once in Phu Quoc, the ferry will arrive approximately 20km away from Duong Dong, which is the main tourist area. We would recommend getting a taxi from here, which will cost approximately 150,000 VND ($8).

How to get to Phu Quoc by airplane

Travelling by plane may seem indulgent but in Vietnam, it’s a really useful option especially when travelling long distances. We opted to use domestic flights to travel from Hoi An to Phu Quoc and found this to be a very straightforward process.

There are three airlines that operate flights to Phu Quoc from either Hanoi, Da Nang (Hoi An) or Ho Chi Minh. These are Vietjet, Vietnam Airlines or Bamboo. Flight time ranges from 1 hour 40 minutes (Hanoi), 1 hour 30 minutes (Da Nang) to 1 hour (Ho Chi Minh) and flights run frequently throughout the day.

Prices of flights to Phu Quoc are very reasonable at approximately $40 one way. All flights can be booked via SkyScanner.

Top Tip: On domestic flights in Vietnam, you can travel with liquids in your luggage. Therefore you do not need to dispose of any toiletries or bottles of water before you board.

How to get to Phu Quoc by train

It is not feasible to travel to Phu Quoc by train. There are no trains from Ho Chi Minh to Phu Quoc. Instead, you can either take the bus and a boat to reach Phu Quoc, or you can fly on an airplane.

We love independent travel, but sometimes a tour can be the best way to travel the country. It’s also a great way to make friends for life.

G Adventures has some excellent tours for Vietnam.

The first, is a 22 day trip which includes the highlights of Vietnam and Laos.

The second, is a great trip, but a little shorter for anyone who doesn’t have as long to spend travelling but still wants to see everything! The ten day trip travels from the North to the South of Vietnam.
