HANOI VERSUS HO CHI MINH CITY: WHICH ONE TO VISIT?
Embarking on a journey through Vietnam, we were lucky enough to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City spending between 7 and 10 days in each. From bustling markets to historical landmarks, our adventure unfolded as we uncovered the distinct personalities of these vibrant cities. But, if we had to choose between the two, which one would we go for? Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City, which one should you visit?
Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City: Which one to visit
HANOI
As you step into the enchanting streets of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, a different cadence unfolds – a rhythm that harks back to centuries of history and whispers of ancient tales. Meander through the narrow alleys of the Old Quarter, where time seems to linger in the air, and every corner hides a treasure trove of street food delights. Hanoi’s charm lies in its cultural tapestry, woven with the threads of colonial architecture, serene lakes, and the sacred temples of the Temple of Literature and the One Pillar Pagoda. Dive into the essence of northern Vietnamese cuisine with steaming bowls of pho, aromatic bun cha, and the captivating (but strange) allure of egg coffee.
HO CHI MINH CITY
In the southern bustle of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City emerges as a dynamic metropolis, a sprawling canvas painted with the hues of urban vibrancy and historical echoes. Navigate the chaotic symphony of motorbike-filled streets as you explore the electric energy of District One, home to the iconic Ben Thanh Market and the dazzling nightlife of Bui Vien Street. From the glamorous rooftop bars that touch the city’s sky to the poignant stories whispered within the walls of the War Remnants Museum, HCMC, is a mesmerizing blend of tradition and modernity.
Both cities stole our hearts during our visit to Vietnam. We firmly believe that you should try to visit Hanoi and HCMC if you can – both are vital parts of a full Vietnam itinerary and worthy of exploration as cities. They are also great jumping off points to visit the North and South of the country respectively.

Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City: When to visit and weather
HANOI
The city has four distinct seasons. Spring (March to April) is crisp, with blooming flowers and a festive atmosphere. Summer, May to August is hot, humid and sometimes rainy. Expect temperatures of between 25 and 30 degrees centigrade. Autumn (September to November) brings cool temperatures and a golden hue to the city. Winter, December to February is surprisingly chilly in Hanoi, expect between 10 and 20 degrees centigrade. We visited in December and needed lots of clothes to wrap up warm.
HO CHI MINH CITY
Ho Chi Minh City is a lot more tropical than Hanoi. There are two seasons – a dry season (December to April) and a wet season (May to November). We opted for the dry season, perfect for exploring without getting caught in torrential rain and lovely to enjoy some sun on our faces.
Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City: How long to spend
HANOI
Three to four days is ideal, but you can cover the main sites in two days if needed. This would give ample time to explore the Old Quarter’s labyrinthine streets, visit cultural landmarks and sample the nightlife. But you will want extra days to do trips to Ha Long Bay and other landmarks in the North of Vietnam.
Find our guide to spending two, three or four days in Hanoi here.
HO CHI MINH CITY
Plan for a similar duration in Ho Chi Minh City – two to four days is ideal. This is enough time to dive into dynamic street life, visit historical sites and get to know the restaurant scene in the city. However, you will want longer if you plan to visit Mekong Delta for a memorable day trip.

Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City: For Foodies
HANOI FOOD AND RESTAURANTS
Vietnam’s capital a food lover’s paradise! Dive into the chaos of street food stalls in the Old Quarter. Don’t miss the iconic pho (the most famous dish in Hanoi), bun cha, and egg coffee. The night markets in Hanoi are huge and a great place to visit for foodies in the city.
HO CHI MINH CITY FOOD AND RESTAURANTS
HCMC is a gastronomic haven. We were totally blown away by the array of restaurants in District One. The foodie scene is super cosmopolitan with an array of upscale restaurants, but you can also find the sticky, back-street, Vietnamese haunts too.
There’s a restaurant for every cuisine you could possibly think of in Ho Chi Minh City. Italian food? Try 4Ps (for incredible pizza and pasta). Japanese? Mexican? Korean? French? I even spotted a German restaurant.
But, chances are if you’re visiting Ho Chi Minh City, you’re looking for Vietnamese food. Well, luckily, it’s everywhere to be seen in HCMC. Here’s our list of some of the best we tried:
- Home Restaurant – if you’re looking for wifi, card payment facilities and a clean environment
- Pho Quyn – for Pho!
- Den Long – for somewhere quiet with good cocktails and great food (also possible to pay on card with no fee)
- Ben Thahn Market – for snacks and a quick bite
VERDICT
- Culinary Diversity: Both cities offer a wide range of Vietnamese dishes, but Hanoi’s focus is on traditional northern flavors, while Ho Chi Minh City’s culinary scene reflects a more diverse range of regional influences.
- Street Food Culture: Hanoi is often considered the epitome of authentic street food experiences, with its bustling night markets and narrow alleys filled with food stalls. Ho Chi Minh City, while also having vibrant street food scenes, might have more formalized eateries.
- Atmosphere: Hanoi’s food scene is intertwined with its charming, historic ambiance, often enjoyed in small, family-run establishments. Ho Chi Minh City’s food scene, especially in District 1, has a more modern, bustling vibe.
