BEST DAY TRIPS FROM TIRANA: EXPLORE ALBANIA FROM THE CAPITAL.
I’m going to start this blog post with one important point. And that is to say that if you can, you should explore Albania widely. Ideally spending at least one week, or longer seeing more of the country. And, whilst I adore Tirana, there’s so much to see beyond the capital.
That said, I am completely aware that travellers may only have a few days to spend in Albania. Naturally, Tirana is a great base from which to take a day trip or two, especially if pushed for time.
That said, if you can, please spend at least two days in Tirana, just seeing Tirana. The city has so much to offer in itself. You can find our guide to seeing the highlights of the city in two days here.
Now, to day trips. Here’s a handy guide to the best day trips from Tirana – from ancient towns to gorgeous lakes and dramatic mountains.
1. Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows

Just about 2 hours’ drive south of Tirana, Berat is one of Albania’s most charming and UNESCO-listed towns. Famous for its white Ottoman houses that cascade down the hillside, Berat offers a gentle stroll through history.
Wander the cobbled streets of Mangalem and Gorica quarters and head up to the ruin of the old castle for excellent views.
Why go? Perfect for lovers of history and architecture, with plenty of cafés for people watching. Find out more about the best things to do in Berat here.
Transport: Regular buses leave from Tirana’s south bus station, but for a day trip I’d recommend taking a tour which will be much more efficient.
2. Krujë – The Fortress Town with a Story

Less than an hour north of Tirana, Krujë is a must-visit for history buffs. The town’s fortress, perched on a rocky hill, was the stronghold of national hero Skanderbeg during his resistance against the Ottoman Empire.
Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated to him and offers spectacular views over the surrounding valleys.
Don’t miss the lively bazaar below the fortress – perfect for picking up handcrafted souvenirs and tasting local snacks. It’s super colourful and a wonderful place to nose around for a few hours.
Why go? For a mix of history, shopping, and Albanian culture.
Transport: Frequent minibuses from Tirana’s north bus station make this an easy and popular day trip. You can also book a tour which includes a guide and hotel pick up.
3. Bovilla Reservoir – A Serene Nature Escape

Only about 30 minutes from Tirana, Bovilla Reservoir is a peaceful spot for nature lovers. Surrounded by lush hills, it’s a great place to picnic, hike, or just unwind by the calm water.
If you want a break from city life without the travel hassle, Bovilla is an easy day trip.
Just keep in mind that this is not a natural lake, although it is pretty. It has also become fairly popular recently. All that aside, we did enjoy our visit. Find out more about Bovilla Lake here.
Why go? Quick escape for nature and some fresh air.
Transport: Best reached by tour. I wouldn’t want to attempt to take a hire car down the tracks to get here.
4. Durrës – Albania’s Seaside City

For a classic beach day mixed with a bit of history, head to Durrës. Just a 40-minute drive from Tirana, this coastal city boasts one of the longest sandy beaches in Albania.
Durrës also has a Roman amphitheatre, ancient mosaics, and a lively promenade lined with cafés and seafood restaurants. I spent a couple of days in Durrës and would say that it’s a really unique place and a total contrast to the Albanian Riviera further South.
Why go? Ideal for a beach day with a side of archaeology.
Transport: Frequent buses run between Tirana and Durrës, or grab a quick taxi.
5. Ohrid (North Macedonia) – A Cross-Border Adventure

Though a bit ambitious for a day trip (around 3 hours each way), Ohrid is a stunning option if you want to cross borders. Located in North Macedonia, Ohrid is famed for its crystal-clear lake, historic churches, and charming old town. It’s a favourite for nature lovers and culture vultures alike.
Again, ideally you would spend a few days in Ohrid. It really is an idyllic place. But if you are pushed for time and want to see it, then it may be manageable in a day.
Why go? For a scenic and cultural day out beyond Albania’s borders.
Transport: Private tours is the best way.
6. Albanian Alps – Dramatic Mountain Beauty

If you’re up for an early start and an active day, the Albanian Alps offer jaw-dropping scenery. Places like Theth or Valbona are iconic for rugged mountains, traditional villages, and wild hiking trails. While an overnight trip is ideal, you can do a taste of the Alps with a guided day tour from Tirana.
Why go? For spectacular landscapes and a break from city life.
Transport: Best done via organised tours or by renting a car with a driver.
7. Komani Lake – The Fjord of Albania
Komani Lake is a stunning reservoir carved between steep cliffs, often compared to a fjord. The highlight here is the boat ride across the lake, which reveals dramatic scenery and remote mountain villages. It’s a bit of a trek from Tirana (around 3-4 hours), so expect a long but rewarding day.
Why go? For nature lovers who appreciate dramatic boat trips and mountain views.
Transport: Tours from Tirana are available, combining the boat ride with a drive.
Final Tips for Day Trips from Tirana
- Transport: Albania’s public transport is affordable but can be irregular. For maximum flexibility and comfort, consider renting a car or booking a private tour.
- Timing: Start early to make the most of your day – many attractions close by early evening.
- Pack smart: Bring sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes, especially if you’re planning hikes or walking tours.
- Currency: Most places accept cash only, so have some Albanian lek handy.
