THE RISE OF THE LUXURY HOSTEL: REDEFINING BUDGET TRAVEL IN STYLE.
When we first traveled to hostels, in our teens and twenties, things were a little different. The word “hostel” was synonymous with cramped dormitories, basic amenities, shower curtains covered in mildew and sticky communal kitchens piled high with dirty dishes and empty beer hotels.
I was on the roof top of a Mexican hostel with fifteen other early risers in downward dog position during the free yoga session, when the realization hit. It dawned on me that we are now in the era of luxury hostels.
In this blog post, I’ll explore the evolution of hostels from budget basics to chic accommodation that cater to discerning travelers seeking both affordability and a luxurious experience. What are the benefits of staying in luxury hostels? And, where are the best luxury hostels around the world?
BENEFITS OF LUXURY HOSTELS
Beyond Budget Basics
Traditionally, hostels were chosen primarily for their affordability, often sacrificing comfort and aesthetics. However, the luxury hostel concept introduces a refreshing change, elevating the standard of accommodations for budget-conscious travelers. From plush bedding to stylish interiors, these hostels prioritize comfort without breaking the bank.
Chic Design
Luxury hostels are breaking away from the cookie-cutter design of the past, opting instead for chic interiors that rival boutique hotels. Trendy furnishings, vibrant color schemes, the odd palm tree thrown into the mix and thoughtfully curated spaces create an inviting ambiance that goes beyond the functional aspects of traditional hostels. Travelers can now enjoy Instagram-worthy settings without compromising their budget.
Private Rooms and Ensuite Facilities
One of the defining features of luxury hostels is the availability of private rooms with en-suite facilities. This shift acknowledges the diverse needs of travelers, providing a more intimate and personalized experience. Whether you’re a solo adventurer or a couple seeking a budget-friendly yet private escape, luxury hostels offer a range of options to suit individual preferences.
This model of accommodation also makes luxury hostels more accessible to older generations – you can mingle with the younger ones during the day, but you don’t have to share a room with them.
Social Spaces for Connection
While the emphasis on privacy is growing, luxury hostels also recognize the social aspect that makes hostelling unique. Common spaces are designed to encourage interaction and connection among guests. From rooftop lounges to trendy communal kitchens, these hostels foster a sense of community while maintaining an upscale atmosphere.
The social and communal space is one of the reasons that we frequently choose to stay in hostels, rather than budget hotels. When you compare the two options, you get way more value for money when it comes to a hostel, if space to relax and socialize is important to you.
Recognizing the shift in priorities for travellers, hostels are now far less likely to offer “bar crawls” complete with stinking hangovers and more likely to offer yoga, bicycle tours or cooking classes. Twenty years ago, I’m not sure many hostel guests would be found rolling out a yoga mat at 08:30, more so, rolling into bed at 04:30. What’s more, with clever features on their app, if you book via Hostel World, you can find out who will be in your hostel before you arrive and make connections online.
Co-working space
Luxury hostels are often frequented by full-time travellers/ digital nomads (like us) or those who are able to work remotely (travelling for bleisure.) Co-working space is one of the benefits of choosing a luxury hostel. There will either be a dedicated room or area for workers, normally with high-speed internet, decent seating and often free coffee. Or, at the very least, good internet and a few tables that you can use for hours on end without being chased away or forced to buy something.
Unique Experiences and Local Connections
Luxury hostels are not just a place to rest your head; they are a gateway to local experiences. Many of these accommodations offer curated tours, workshops, and events that connect travelers with the culture and authenticity of the destination. It’s not just about where you stay; it’s about the entire travel experience. For example, we stayed in a hostel in Albania which offered a three day hiking tour into the Albanian Alps.
Sustainable Practices
As eco-conscious travel gains momentum, luxury hostels are embracing sustainability. From energy-efficient practices to eco-friendly amenities, these accommodations align with the values of environmentally conscious travelers, proving that luxury and sustainability can coexist. Everywhere you look in a luxury hostel, you’ll be advised to recycle, save water and be kind to the environment.
The rise of the luxury hostel signifies a paradigm shift in the world of budget travel. Travelers no longer need to compromise comfort, design, or privacy when choosing affordable accommodations. Luxury hostels offer an enticing blend of style, affordability, and community, ushering in a new era where budget travel is synonymous with elegance and enriching experiences.
So, the next time you plan your journey, consider the allure of a luxury hostel – where comfort meets affordability in the most stylish way possible. Check out below some of best luxury hostels around the world that we would love to stay at.
