When we first traveled to hostels, in our teens and twenties, things were a little different. The word “hostel” was synonymous with cramped dormitories, basic amenities, shower curtains covered in mildew and sticky communal kitchens piled high with dirty dishes and empty beer hotels.
I was on the roof top of a Mexican hostel with fifteen other early risers in downward dog position during the free yoga session, when the realization hit. It dawned on me that we are now in the era of luxury hostels.

Twenty years ago, I’m not sure many hostel guests would be found rolling out a yoga mat at 08:30, more so, rolling into bed at 04:30. Or, at the very least, good internet and a few tables that you can use for hours on end without being chased away or forced to buy something.
