CANARY ISLANDS FERRIES: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GO ISLAND HOPPING.

In early 2024, we traveled extensively around the Canary Islands, island hopping from one to the other. We were so impressed with the ease of moving around the Canary Islands, as well as the islands themselves, that we wanted to share this blog post about the ferries.

Many people head to Greece for island hopping, but the Canaries offer an alternative. From the desert sands of Fuerteventura, to the rich green of Gran Canaria and the tranquility of La Gomera – you can explore it all.

This blog post highlights the most popular routes for Canary Island ferries, how to book and what to expect onboard.

Are there ferries between the Canary Islands? And, what to expect?

Firstly, yes, there are ferries between the Canary Islands. We traveled extensively around the islands earlier this year and had a fantastic experience using the ferries.

There are three main companies operating sailings in the Canary Islands. In our experience, the ferries run like clockwork. They are on time and efficient. We predominately used Fred Olsen ferries and found the service on board to be excellent and the boats to be very comfortable.

The shorter journeys are sailed by smaller boats, where you on the top deck and enjoy the views. Longer routes have larger boats, these have a number of seating areas inside, with toilets and (quite reasonably priced) cafes on board. Although we traveled as foot passengers, many routes offer car decks so you can drive onto the ferry.

The ports are small and easy to navigate, normally found very close to the town centre. Simply turn up, show your ticket and passport and board the boat!
