WHERE TO GET YOUR CAMINO CREDENTIAL IN SEVILLA + FAQ’s ABOUT STARTING THE VIA DE LA PLATA THERE.

If you are starting the Via de la Plata in Sevilla, one of the first things you will need is a Camino credential (pilgrim passport). This small booklet records your journey as you walk to Santiago de Compostela and allows you to collect sellos (stamps) along the way. It is also required if you plan to stay in pilgrim albergues.

Sevilla is a popular starting point for the Via de la Plata and there are a few different places in the city where you can buy a credential before you set off. Below you will find the easiest places to get one, plus a few helpful FAQs about starting the route in Sevilla, including where the Camino officially begins, where to get your first stamp and where to stay the night before you start walking.

Where to get your Camino credential in Sevilla

For pilgrims starting the Via de la Plata in Sevilla, you will most likely want to collect a credential (pilgrim passport), before setting off.

The credential is a record of your pilgrimage and a chance to collect sellos (stamps) at each point in your journey. It’s worth saying that albergues will also want to see your credential when you register to stay overnight.

In Sevilla, there are four places where you can buy a credential for the Camino de Santiago:

1/ Hotel Simón – is possibly the easiest place to buy a credential. The hotel is close to the cathedral and has a manned reception. You can buy credentials for €2 (cash only.)

2/ Triana Backpackers Hostel – across the river you can find Triana Backpacker’s Hostel. The reception is open 24/7 and you can buy a credential from them, even if you’re not staying at the hostel.

3/ Archbishop’s Palace there is a shop inside Palacio Arzobispal de Sevilla (located here opposite the Giralda). The palace is closed on the weekends and after 14:00 Monday to Friday.

4/ Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Sevilla – located in Triana (here). Opening hours are limited, sometimes 18:00 to 20:00 in the evening.

Note: it is not possible to buy a credential at the tourist information near the Cathedral nor at the Cathedral itself.

Where can you get a stamp at Sevilla Cathedral

You won’t be surprised to learn that the cathedral in Sevilla is extremely popular to visit as a tourist attraction.

If you plan to actually visit the cathedral, it’s best to book your tickets in advance online. If you are visiting, you can ask the security for a stamp, or someone in the reception as you enter.

That said, if you don’t plan to go inside, you can simply ask someone on the door for a stamp – we went to the main entrance and just asked the security staff, who had a stamp on hand ready. If there are queues, you can normally just pop to the front to ask for a stamp, rather than waiting.

Where does the Via de la Plata start in Sevilla

As you might expect, the Via de la Plata starts right outside the cathedral in Sevilla. From there, the trail crosses the river via Triana Bridge and heads into Triana.

You can find the first Camino marker – showing the 1006km distance to Santiago de Compostela – just outside the cathedral.

Best place to stay in Sevilla before your Camino

Sevilla is a very walkable city. You can choose where to stay based on how long you plan to spend in the city and whether you want to explore.

The Centre is the most practical choice if you want to start walking at the cathedral and to explore the main attractions. We loved El Viajero en Sevilla, inexpensive rooms and excellent location.

If you prefer a neighbourhood away from the main tourist centre, try Feria. This area has great tapas bars and restaurants for the evening and feels more lowkey. Consider somewhere like Hoteles del Sur.

Finally, if you have a long walking day and perhaps have visited Sevilla before, you may want to stay in Triana. This way, you have an easy exit out of the city. Triana Backpackers Hostel offers pilgrim rates for a one night stay (€18) and you can buy your credential there.
